So the ascites battle continues (fluid build up in the abdomen). I got drained again yesterday (Monday) and they took almost 5 liters out and I’m already filling back up. I’m scheduled again on Friday for another drainage but what we’re running into is I’m filling up faster than they can get me in so I’m spending several days in sheer agony and having to take some serious hardcore pain meds just to take the edge off the pain.
Another problem with draining that much fluid at a time is my creatinine and BUN levels dropped to damn near nothing, and actually put me into what they call paracentesis syndrome – draining the fluid took all the pressure off my organs, but left me so weak I literally could not stand. I had kaleidoscope vision, couldn’t turn my head too fast without feeling sick or wanting to throw up, and I spent the entire rest of the day in bed with severe abdominal cramping and sheer exhaustion. Apparently that fluid is filled with proteins so when they take that much out, they basically took all the protein out of my system, and it damn near put me in the hospital. Soooooooo we won’t be doing that again… I have now learned that I have to dramatically increase my protein intake, especially on the days of these procedures.

Good news ! After speaking with my doctor today and discussing what happened yesterday we are scheduling me next week to have a catheter put into my side under my ribcage and they are going to teach me to drain it on my own at home. No more waiting for an appointment, no more being in agony forr days on end. We are still hopeful that the next couple rounds of chemo will make this problem go away, but for now I will have the catheter in place in case it doesn’t.
One annoying side effect of the chemo infusion is that this specific drug blocks some kind of process in the hair and skin follicles and actually makes you break out horrendously. I look like a 14 year-old pubescent teenager To combat this I am using a butt load of hydrocortisone cream and will actually be starting oral steroid medication this week because the eruptions are in and around my ears (OUCH) and all over my scalp. Brushing my hair is very painful
I am sticking to my carnivore diet, and I’m hopeful my next CT in 3 months actually shows progress. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers, I love you all!!
